WHAT TO WEAR THIS WEEKEND

By Dinah van Tulleken STYLE EDITOR

THE SLIP SKIRT

SLIP skirts. I love them in theory but in the back of my mind, I’m always worried people will think I’ve gone out in underwear. Some people are happy with that sort of ambiguity, but it’s not my style. This season, however, I’ve had to rethink – and I’ve found smart ways to make it work for me.

CATWALK STAR

SLIPS are hard to avoid at the moment. They flooded the catwalk: understated black at Max Mara; sequinned at Victoria Beckham; bright florals at Marni... And now they’re taking over the High Street, too. I love the summery blue one at Marks & Spencer or the standout, flared lime green version from Ghost.

DRESS IT DOWN

THE whole point of slips is they’re easy to dress up for that ‘smart but risqué’ look, but I’ve discovered mine work better when I dress them down. Khaki seemed like a safe place to start and I teamed this John Lewis design with what I call my ‘emotional support’ item of clothing – a Breton stripe. It makes everything immediately wearable.

Try yours with a simple lightweight roundneck knit, a cardigan or, if you’re feeling bolder, a matching satin camisole. Shirts work too.

MIDI MARVEL

THE new skirts are a mercifully longer midi-length that feels more breezy and casual than kneelength. I’m a big fan of pairing this hemline with flats, but if you’re looking for a little height, swap the sandals for this summer’s wearable block heels.

Obviously it also looks awesome with a pair of sky-high court shoes, but what doesn’t?
