Cycling is hit by new trans row

DAVID COVERDALE

BRITISH Cycling have been hit by a new transgender controversy after it emerged a trans woman won a national female race this month. They suspended their trans policy in the wake of the row over Emily Bridges, who had been due to compete in last month’s National Omnium Championships after transitioning. Bridges and other athletes were blocked from switching their racing licence from male to female, banning them from competing in their desired category until a review. But existing trans riders have been allowed to continue, with trans woman Maxine Yates winning a women’s downhill mountain bike race in Fort William. Jane Page, who was second, complained to British Cycling. ‘It’s clear they are not enforcing their own rules,’ she said. ‘Like a lot of women, I feel let down by this.’ Yates said: ‘As I already had a licence and was not competing at an elite level, I was allowed to compete. I have followed their rules.’
