Maloney is favourite for Dundee after Ross drops out of running

SHAUN MALONEy is in pole position to become the new manager of Dundee after Jack Ross dropped out of the running last night. Former Hibernian head coach Maloney could be announced in the coming days as the Dark Blues bid to return to the Premiership at the first attempt. Dundee director of football Gordon Strachan had whittled down his shortlist to the two former Hibs managers but 45-year-old Ross is no longer in contention, with reports suggesting he has other opportunities at home and abroad. Former Belgium coach Maloney endured a torrid 120-day spell at Easter Road — winning just six games — after succeeding Ross in December 2021. But Strachan and managing director John Nelms are set to offer him the chance to get his managerial career back on track. If Maloney is appointed, he will succeed Mark McGhee, who replaced James McPake as manager in February but won only one of his 14 games in charge and departed at the end of the season following Dundee’s relegation to the cinch Championship. Maloney played under Strachan with both Celtic and Scotland.
