£450k fine over bath drowning

A CHARITY has been fined £450,000 after a woman in its care drowned in a bath.

The Richmond Fellowship Scotland housed Margaret Glasgow for four weeks until her death on June 10, 2016.

Jurors heard staff used a baby monitor during the day to manage the 59-yearold, who had severe autism and communication issues. They also heard how she had been able to leave her room at Cherry Tree Court, in Cambuslang, Lanarkshire, without being noticed.

Richmond was found guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court of exposing Miss Glasgow to risks to her health and safety.

Sheriff principal Craig Turnbull said the lack of water safety measures had put her at risk. He said: ‘Between 1 and 2am Margaret, without knowledge of the support workers, entered her bathroom, placed the plug in the bath, turned on the taps and climbed in where she drowned.’ Lawyers for Richmond told the court changes had been implemented following the tragedy.
