Celtic would be the dream Euro tie for Liverpool star Robertson

By STEPHEN McGOWAN

ANDY ROBERTSON admits he would love to fulfil a childhood dream by lining up against Celtic in next season’s Champions League. The Scotland captain is preparing for tomorrow night’s final between Liverpool and Real Madrid in Paris before joining Steve Clarke’s squad for the World Cup play-off semi-final against Ukraine next week. Robertson, who was released by Celtic as a youngster for being too small, served as a ball boy on big European nights at Parkhead but now wants to sample the experience as a player in his home city of Glasgow. ‘As a young boy, my dream was to play Champions League football at Celtic Park,’ he told BBC Scotland. ‘I wanted to be in a green and white jersey. Now being at such a massive club like Liverpool I think I would enjoy it. ‘Obviously I’ve been there as a fan, done ball-boy games for Champions Leagues at Celtic and the atmosphere is incredible — very similar to Anfield — and I’d love the rest of them (the Liverpool players) to experience it in there. Obviously that’s not till next season but, if we did get them, it would be an occasion I would look forward to.’ Liverpool and Real Madrid have met in a European Cup final in Paris before, back in 1981. The English champions won an uninspiring contest 1-0 when left-back Alan Kennedy emerged as a late goalscoring hero. Admitting he would love to have his own Kennedy moment in Paris tomorrow night, Robertson grinned: ‘I’ve heard a lot of people say that. Obviously Alan scored in Paris against Real Madrid and everything. So if I get in the position I will try my best, of course I will. But maybe my focus is keeping a clean sheet and letting Mo Salah take the credit for that one. ‘We will wait and see. Obviously we hope we win and I hope I contribute with a good performance. ‘If I do get the chance to be the matchwinner, then I’ll bite your hand off for it.’
