Comics back Sadowitz after show cancelled

By Krissy Storrar

COMEDIANS have rallied in support of Jerry Sadowitz after his Edinburgh Fringe show was cancelled over its controversial content.

The Scots comic and magician – known for his edgy performances – had his Not For Anyone show scrapped by leading venue the Pleasance after it said it received an ‘unprecedented number of complaints’.

Yesterday the venue said it pulled the plug on the show as audience members felt ‘unsafe’ and a ‘large number of people walked out’ of Friday’s show.

It described 60-year-old Mr Sadowitz’s material as ‘extreme in its racism, sexism, homophobia and misogyny’.

But a string of comedians have come to his defence.

Richard Herring wrote on Twitter: ‘Jerry is a challenging comedian but that’s the whole point. The Fringe should not be cancelling shows in any case. Very worrying development.’

Katherine Ryan, a regular on TV comedy shows, added: ‘Very strange to cancel for apparent “offence” when there’s a content warning on the booking page.’

Scots comedian Fred MacAulay said it was an ‘utterly dreadful development’.

Police Scotland said it has not received any complaints about Mr Sadowitz’s show.
