By Neil Pooran

MORE than £26,000 has been raised for the family of a man who was shot dead on Skye last week.

John MacKinnon, 47, died in a shooting incident on the island on Wednesday morning.

a crowdfunding page was set up by the Sleat Community trust to support Mr MacKinnon’s family.

It had set a target of £5,000 but by last night it had more than quadrupled this amount.

On Friday, Finlay MacDonald, 39, appeared in private at Inverness Sheriff Court before Sheriff Peter Grant-hutchison, accused of murdering Mr MacKinnon.

MacDonald, from tarskavaig, Skye, is also charged with attempting to murder his wife Rowena MacDonald, 32, on the same day.

he faces a further charge of the attempted murder of local chiropractor John Don MacKenzie, 63, at Princes Street, in the mainland village of Dornie, Ross-shire.

a fourth charge of attempting to murder Mr MacKenzie’s wife Fay, also 63, was put before the court.

MacDonald made no plea to allegations of repeatedly discharging a shotgun at his sister’s husband, Mr MacKinnon, and murdering him.

It is said to have taken place in the village of teangue, on Skye.

he was remanded in custody and will appear in court again within the next week.

Mr MacKinnon’s family released a statement via police following his death. It said: ‘John was a loving husband, father of six, brother, uncle and grandfather to his family, and was a much-loved member of the community. John loved the outdoors, was a keen motorcyclist and, as a loved father, shared his activities with his family.’
