Greens target ‘angels’ share’

By Gavin Madeley

MINISTERS have commissioned a sixmonth study into whisky vapour.

Every year, around 2 per cent of Scotland’s national drink – the ‘angels’ share’ – evaporates as it matures in casks.

Now the Scottish Government wants to know if non-methane volatile organic compounds which escape cause ‘significant health or environmental impacts’.

The discharges, in the form of ethanol, from malt whisky maturation increased by 54 per cent between 2005 and 2019 as the sector expanded.

Green MSP Ariane Burgess told Scotland on Sunday: ‘To hit our net-zero targets we need to think how we can reduce emissions, and that applies to all our industries.’

A spokesman for the Scotch Whisky Association said: ‘Some loss of spirit from casks during maturation is a natural part of the whisky making process. The Scottish Government has previously stated it is neither harmful to health nor impactful on the environment due to its rapid dispersal.’

A final report is to be submitted by the end of March next year.
