Age discrimination
THE boss of John Lewis, Sharon White, grandly advises those aged 50 to 70 to return to work (Mail).
Thousands would love to, but I know from bitter experience there is raging discrimination against mature workers. When I was 55, I had two dreadful years seeking work. I was up early every day to tramp all over London, but interviews were hard to obtain.
I heard such comments as: ‘You’ve been around a long time and have had quite a lot of jobs.’
I was mocked for being formally dressed, with polished shoes, and made to feel I was washed up.
In our woke world of not offending people’s feelings, no such strictures apply if you are over 50.
