Desalination is one solution

FUTURE droughts are predicted in the UK. One solution would be to build desalination plants. This would produce water suitable for human consumption or irrigation. There are some 18,000 plants operating around the world. Also, ships and submarines use desalination to produce their drinking water. The downside is that desalinating sea water is generally more costly than providing fresh water. However, it has been ascertained that desalination will be economically viable and environmentally sustainable for the foreseeable future. ANDREW HOGG, Burntisland,

Fife. THE solution to droughts is to build desalination plants – as they do in the Middle East and other regions where rain is rare – and keep the reservoirs topped up. What is stopping the UK from following their example? A. RIDDEL, Inverurie,

Aberdeenshire.
