Streeting’s song at betting party hits wrong note

By Tom Witherow

SHADOW health spokesman Wes Streeting sang Robbie Williams’ hit ‘Angels’ at a karaoke party sponsored by the betting industry – hours after posing with parents bereaved by gambling suicide.

He switched the song’s lyrics to ‘I’m loving Starmer instead’ at a conference party on Tuesday night.

The event, sponsored by gambling lobbyists the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), was part of the industry’s multimillion pound lobbying operation to try to ward off draconian legislation.

Hours earlier, Mr Streeting had pledged support to the fight to reform Britain’s gambling industry as he posed for photos with families whose children have taken their own lives after suffering from a gambling addiction.

Lord Foster, chairman of Peers for Gambling Reform, said: ‘It is appallingly bad judgment for a shadow health secretary to be revelling in free hospitality from the gambling industry, who are desperately lobbying to prevent further regulation of gambling.’
