MY GRANDPARENTS’ WAR: EMELI SANDE, 8PM, CH4

IN THE third emotionally charged instalment of this wartime take on Who Do You Think You Are?, the singer Emeli Sande learns about her grandparents’ contributions to the Second World War and beyond. Emeli’s father came to Britain from Zambia, and it is soon evident how her family history reflects the divisive politics of Empire. She starts her journey in the church where her maternal grandparents, Bob and Betty, were married, giving us a spinetingling rendition of Amazing Grace from the pews. We learn that Bob (who had already served in the Battle of El Alamein), and Betty fought to uphold British rule in Kenya; meanwhile, Emile’s grandfather on her dad’s side, Saka Sande, was caught up in the fight to overthrow it. The experience of learning more about the struggles faced by her dad’s family is bittersweet, and leaves Emeli (pictured with Betty) angered by the racism they faced at the time.
