Barmaid calls time on insult at closing

DURIng the late 1950s, I was working in the lounge bar of a local pub. Despite the fact that I’d trained at Pitman’s college in Southampton Row, London, I’d struggled to get an office job, as they wouldn’t employ young married women in those days, in case they left to have babies! One particular lunchtime, a quiet young man was eyeing me up and quietly sipping his drinks but not saying very much. at closing time, when I was walking around picking up ashtrays, etc, he looked me up and down and said: ‘My mates said there was a smashinglooking bird who works here, but I don’t know if it’s you or not!’ he got a snort from me and I kicked him out pronto.
