SPORTSMAIL’S CROWE WINS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD

SPORTSMAIL’S Calum Crowe has been named the best young sports writer in Scotland after lifting this year’s prestigious Jim Rodger Memorial Award. Calum, who joined the Scottish Daily Mail in 2014 as a graduate trainee, has been praised for an outstanding depth of knowledge across a wide range of sports and the maturity of his writing. The award was set up in 1997 to honour the late veteran journalist and is supported by the leading newspapers of Scotland and the Journalists’ Charity. Calum’s article on Josh Taylor’s contentious world championship win over Jack Catterall in February showed a fearless attitude to tackle a difficult subject matter. His other entry was an insightful and colourful interview with Welsh rugby legend Shane Williams prior to the game between Wales and Scotland in this year’s Six Nations. Scottish Daily Mail Sports Editor Steven Donn said: ‘I’m thrilled for Calum to receive the recognition his hard work and talent deserve. ‘Since he joined the sports desk from the Daily Mail trainee scheme, he has bought into our ethos and grown to become an invaluable member of our team. His career will continue to go from strength to strength.’ Calum’s success follows Sportsmail’s remarkable triumph at the Scottish Press Awards last week. Sportsmail’s Heather Dewar won Sports News Writer of the Year and Journalist of the Year, while our rugby correspondent Rob Robertson was named Sports Feature Writer of the Year. The Mail On Sunday’s Gary Keown, meanwhile, won Sports Columnist of the Year for the second year running. Heather was also named runner-up in Sports Feature Writer of the Year, Interviewer of the Year and the Nicola Barry Award for female journalists worthy of recognition.
