BRIDGE MASTERCLASS

PETER DONOVAN

What do you open?

This is a classic full-strength 2NT opener, if you play the normal 20-22 point range. But if you ever come to test weak two bids, you’ll discover that you have an additional tier of bidding available to show the full scale of No Trump ranges, and you may decide to adjust your own ranges. if 2♣-2♦2NT shows 23-24 points, what about 2♦-2♥-2NT (the additional tier)?

One suggestion is that you use 2♣-2♦-2NT for the above hand strength and then work upwards, i.e. 2♦-2♥-2NT (23-24); 2♦-2♥-3NT (25-26), etc. This leaves 2NT to show certain strong hands below 21 hCPs, but which will make game opposite a hand which is going to pass any one-level opening, something like ♠AQ, ♥Qxx, ♦AKQxx, ♣Qxx.

Whatever you choose, you have extra options to suit your preference. Whatever your preferred style, you now have extra options available to refine it.
