By Imogen Horton

FoR Elton John, retirement seemed to be the hardest word.

Now after more than five decades of playing live, the 75-yearold singer is to headline next year’s glastonbury Festival as a final farewell to the UK.

sir Elton – currently on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour which kicked off in 2018, three years after his Final curtain tour in North america – says he ‘couldn’t be more excited’ for what will be an ‘incredibly emotional’ performance on the Pyramid stage.

he said: ‘as the end of my Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour comes into view, there is no more fitting way to say goodbye to my British fans. they have been beyond brilliant.’

sir Elton surprised fans last month during his final Us performance at the La’s dodger stadium when he was joined by British singer dua Lipa. they released a mix last year of sir Elton’s hits Rocket Man, sacrifice, Kiss the Bride and where’s the shoorah?

the star’s final UK performance will be on June 25 next year at glastonbury and will be the first time he has performed at the world-famous music festival.

glastonbury co-organiser Emily Eavis said the festival would be marking the ‘huge moment in both our histories’ with ‘the mother of all send-offs’. Next year’s final leg of the farewell tour will see him play in australia, New Zealand and Europe, with his goodbye to the UK starting in Liverpool next March.

Last week his husband david Furnish hinted sir Elton has not ‘shut the door completely’. he added: ‘will Elton return as a live performer? I hope so.’
