Postecoglou hails Lawwell as he returns in chairman role

By MARK WILSON

ANGE POSTECOGLOU last night hailed the return of Peter Lawwell to Celtic as the club’s new non-executive chairman. Lawwell stepped down as Parkhead chief executive in the summer of 2021 after almost 18 years in the role. He will now replace Ian Bankier as chairman on January 1 and yesterday spoke of the ‘great privilege’ he felt. Manager Postecoglou warmly welcomed Lawwell’s appointment, stressing how valuable the 63-year-old had been in helping him during his time at Celtic. ‘The people who made the decision are best placed to answer what Peter brings,’ said the Australian, who joined from Japanese side Yokohama F. Marinos just as Lawwell (left) was leaving as chief executive. ‘But, from my perspective, I’m delighted. ‘He was probably the first person I spoke to about the

position here and he was hugely instrumental in bringing me to the football club. ‘Even though he hasn’t been working in an official capacity, he’s been a great support to me. ‘It’s great to see him involved again as chairman. He’s had so much success at this club and he knows the place inside out.’ Despite the numerous trophies Celtic won during Lawwell’s tenure as chief executive — including 13 league titles — he can still divide opinion among sections of the club’s fanbase. ‘I think continuity and stability are important at a club,’ countered Postecoglou. ‘Like any side around the world, the more stable you are, the more chance you have of success. ‘With Ian stepping down, it was important the person replacing him understands this football club. ‘Peter has all those attributes and experience, and I’m sure the club will benefit.’ Lawwell has continued to represent Celtic as a board member of the European Club Association. Asked about that continental influence, Postecoglou said: ‘That is important as well, definitely. I would think that was another reason why the decision was made to bring him in. ‘I’m not involved in that side but I see it from a football perspective and what he brings in support of the football department. That’s where the relationship is great for me.’ Lawwell’s appointment was confirmed in a club statement issued yesterday afternoon. ‘As a lifelong Celtic supporter it is a great privilege to be asked to take up the position,’ he said. ‘These are exciting times for the club and I look forward to contributing to the wellbeing and success of the club. ‘Our objective as ever will be to grow and further develop the club across all areas. I will be offering my support and guidance to the board and executive management team to ensure we continue to drive the club forward and protect and promote the interests of our supporters.’
