‘Best place to live in Scotland’

Rural setting and foodie scene puts village on top

By John Paul Breslin

ITS rural setting and quaint layout has made it a draw for many, including Beatrix Potter who often spent childhood summers there.

Now the village of Dunkeld has written its own enchanting story, by being voted the best place to live in Scotland.

Situated on the banks of the Tay, it was praised for its proximity to nature and top-notch food scene.

Its connections to Edinburgh and Glasgow from nearby Perth also helped it to secure the top spot for Scotland in the annual Sunday Times Best Places to Live guide. Attractive shops include Aran

Bakery and general store Lon – both run by ex-Great British Bake Off contestant Flora Shedden.

Judges also noted the village offers easy access to nature with countless walks, including those in and around Hermitage Forest.

While Dunkeld may be a peaceful location today, it was not always so.

A fierce battle raged in the streets on August 21, 1689, between the Jacobites and government soldiers. Many of the buildings were burned to the ground.

Other Scots locations to make the list include East Linton, in East Lothian, and Edinburgh’s Portobello.

Helen Davies, editor of Best Places to Live 2023, said: ‘Attractive surroundings, good neighbours and a comfortable home are the best defences when the stresses of modern life seem overwhelming.

‘This guide is a celebration of towns, cities and villages that are each a fantastic place to live in 2023, from Orkney to Felixstowe, the Chew Valley to Manchester city centre.’

She added: ‘Whether you’re downsizing, trading up or getting onto the property ladder, there will be somewhere to suit you.’
