HEROES WHO SWITCHED ALLEGIANCE

BORN in Norwich 27 years ago, Angus Gunn represented England at every level from Under-16s to 21s and has been included in squads and training camps for the A team. On Saturday, though, there is every chance the Norwich City man will keep goal for Scotland against Cyprus in their opening Euro 2024 qualifier, following in the footsteps of his father Bryan, who won six caps between 1990 and 1994. Confirmation of this switch of allegiances will see Gunn become the latest player born in England to pull on a Scotland jersey. Scott McTominay, Liam Cooper, Jacob Brown and Che Adams are also in the current squad through their bloodline. While not all English-born players have been resounding successes down the years, there’s no question the national team would have been significantly weaker had many of them not felt Scottish or been willing to set aside their early ambitions of playing for the country of their birth. Here, Sportsmail’s JOHN McGARRY looks at nine of the best players to have been born on the other side of Hadrian’s Wall that went on to play with distinction in dark blue.
