RADIO 3 IN CONCERT, 7.30PM, RADIO 3

GUSTAV MAHLER endured heartbreak, terrible grief, pain and serious illness throughout his life, yet so much of his music floats serenely across the air, taking us to a place of limitless horizons and into infinity. The soprano Aphrodite Patoulidou (pictured) is the soloist in this concert from the Barbican in London, which includes Mahler’s Symphony No 4, with its touching song of a child’s vision of heaven, where the angels bake the bread and St Martha is the cook. The programme opens with another work on a heavenly theme in Olivier Messiaen L’Ascension.

IT’S Diana Ross’s birthday on Sunday, so MICHELLE VISAGE’S HANDBAG HITS

(8.30PM, RADIO 2) wraps up a present of the singer’s greatest hits. Miss Ross has been a class act from her time with the Supremes, through her solo career, to her dazzling, kimono-clad, beaded and feathered turn at Glastonbury last year. It’s not just about the frocks and the glamour, though — there’s the voice, the impeccable timing, and a real feel for lyrics that make Diana such a star.
