Brits ‘trying to be too green’

HOUSEHOLDS are to be told to be more discerning when binning their rubbish in a crackdown on so-called ‘wishcycling’.

A UK Government drive aims to stop people trying to recycle items such as plastic bags and toothpaste tubes that cannot be processed.

The Department for environment, Food and rural Affairs said that in the initiative south of the Border it wants ‘to make recycling easier and ensure there is a consistent service. This will help increase recycled material... and boost a growing recycling industry.’

Waste management giant Biffa has a guide on its website to wish-cycling.

It highlights two main types – with the first being ‘items that cannot be sorted and processed with mixed recycling’, including crisp packets, foil pouches and plastic bags. The second type includes contaminated materials such as jars with food inside, half-full shampoo bottles and pizza boxes stained with cheese.
