Insta-attraction! How social media played Cupid for Karen

By Stuart MacDonald

IT is often a platform that sees people angrily air their views publicly.

But now Scots actress Karen Gillan has revealed social media can be a place where romance blossoms after she met her husband online.

The Guardians of the Galaxy star has told how she started following comedy writer Nick Kocher on Instagram and Twitter.

After taking a shine to him, the Inverness-born 35-year-old decided to send him direct messages on the platforms and the pair got chatting.

The couple got married at Castle Toward, near Dunoon, Argyll, in May last year and live in Los Angeles.

Ms Gillan said: ‘I slid into his DMs on Instagram. He popped up on my recommended friends list on Instagram. The algorithm is tearing the country apart but it brought me together with my guy. I followed him on Instagram and then he didn’t DM me. I thought he might be like, ‘Oh, hey’, but he didn’t so then I followed him on Twitter as well.

‘So I DM’d him on Twitter saying, ‘Hi, your tweets are really funny... I’m Karen, by the way’. It wasn’t very interesting but he’s a comedy writer so I thought that’s how you make them feel good about themselves.’

The star was speaking during an appearance on US chat show Live with Kelly and Mark.

Her 36-year-old husband, from Atlanta, Georgia, has written for Saturday Night Live and sitcom It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia as well as performing at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe last year.

Ms Gillan shot to fame when she landed the part of Doctor Who’s assistant Amy Pond in 2010 after dropping out of drama school.

After appearing in three series of the long-running sci-fi hit she left in 2013 and moved to Hollywood.

She is now one of the most-sought after names in the film industry after starring in hit movies which include Jumanji and Avengers: Infinity War.
