Victims lose £400k in ‘despicable’ scams

By David Meikle

SCAMMERS have stolen more than £400,000 from two Scots in a telephone banking fraud. An 85-year-old was conned out of £200,000 after being contacted by a man claiming to be from his bank. The pensioner was told his account was being investigated due to fraudulent activity. He was persuaded to transfer £20,000 followed by further sums to an account provided by the scammer.

In another incident, a 59-year-old businessman was defrauded out of £210,000 after he was told his bank accounts had been compromised.

He transferred the entire balances of his business and personal accounts via internet banking to what he believed was a ‘safe account’.

Chief Inspector Darren Bruce said: ‘The people who carry out these crimes are despicable. Reputable banks and financial institutions will not ask you for your banking details or password by phone. If in doubt, do not share any personal information.’
