Fighting the flab

a QUeSTIoN in the Quick Quiz asked: When did food rationing stop, after starting in 1940 and lasting all through the war and well after it?

I remember there was no obesity problem then, but we were still all fit to carry out the civilian duties required on the home front including policing, nursing, firefighting and factory work.

Why did it need a war to teach us sensible eating?
