Should Chris Packham lead the RSPCA?

WHAT a strange decision by the RSPCA to appoint Chris Packham as its new president. With his Left-wing leanings and a supporter of Extinction Rebellion to boot, he really is a Marmite figure. I would have thought this would have done the RSPCA no favours in retaining support.

STuART A. CHALLIS, Chelmsford, Essex.

I AM a pet lover and long-time supporter of the RSPCA. I have to agree that making Chris Packham president may alienate some traditionalists, but we need to let him have a go. The Government has no regard for animal welfare, so maybe he can stir the pot. J. M. BuCkLEY, Lytham St Annes, Lancs.

I’VE got to thank Chris Packham for saving me money in these hard times. With the RSPCA making him their president, the charity won’t be getting another penny from me. STEVE ROgERS, Mansfield Woodhouse, Notts.

I AGREE with Chris Packham: game shooters are psychopaths. The RSPCA should stand first and foremost for animals. It should not represent the egotistical, idle rich.

SuSAN THORkILDSEN, Cornhill-on-Tweed, Northumberland.

WHY no comment from the new head of the RSPCA about the young lambs cruelly stolen from their mothers? Now if it were farmers . . .

MARTIN SHARP, London SE2.

WITH Chris Packham as its head, the RSPCA is going to the dogs!

DAVID SuNDERLAND, Leeds.

I CAN’T warm to Chris Packham, as he seems typical of the ‘I don’t care what you think, but I am right’ brigade. He is undoubtedly sincere in his beliefs, but I do not feel he is a wise choice as RSPCA president. Leaving aside the fact he is clearly the sort of person who will alienate a sizeable number of people who find many of his views objectionable, he demonstrates a level of passion undesirable in a position that needs to appeal to a broad church. Love and compassion for animals is one thing, but radical activism is quite another and Mr Packham seems incapable of discriminating between the two. A more circumspect and mature attitude is surely required for this increasingly important role. STEVE FORSHAW, kettering, Northants.
