Medvedev dumped out by Brazilian qualifier

LEWIS STEELE

DANIIL MEDVEDEV became the first big casualty at the French Open when the world No 2 lost in five sets to Brazilian qualifier Thiago Seyboth Wild. Following the shock defeat, Medvedev said he was looking forward to forgetting about it and returning to Wimbledon after being banned last year. ‘I will be happy if I’m able to come to Wimbledon,’ he said. ‘If people are going to be harsh (and boo him for being Russian), it is what it is. We cannot control it.’ Coco Gauff survived a scare in coming from a set down to beat Spaniard Rebeka Masarova 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. There were also wins for defending champion Iga Swiatek and another favourite, Elena Rybakina.
