What excites me? The words ‘sold out’

Fashion columnist and influencer Joanne hegarty

Why is it that when something is difficult to get hold of, it instantly makes it massively more covetable? Take my burning desire to own a pair of trainers usually worn by men playing street football, AKA the Adidas Samba OG trainer, which in white with a grey trim are now so hard to find that shop assistants openly smirk if you ask for a pair. These £90 sport shoes, first made in 1949, which have been knocking around under the radar for decades, are suddenly hot because some stylish female influencers wore them on repeat with tailored trousers and – eureka! – a light went on around the world.

While Adidas, which is no doubt rubbing its hands together in glee, has started supplying Samba OGS in other colourways, it’s the original grey and white that are the most elusive and constantly sold out. Which is why, of course, I want some, too.

What else am I craving this spring? My dress mojo doesn’t really kick in until it gets warmer so I’m still spending most of my time in trousers. One grown-up – and very wearable – trend I’m loving this season is the satin or silk trouser. Ideal for an evening out with heels or a blazer, or for daytime styled with a long knit and trainers, these trousers will bring a little luxe into your everyday. And it’s fun to feel oh-so slinky! When buying, look for a slouch-factor leg fit – NA-KD fashion, Arket or Joseph all have good options.

Like everyone, I’m always on the lookout for must-watch TV and have just binged Fleishman is in Trouble on Disney+. It stars Claire Danes as Rachel Fleishman, who drops off her two young children at ex-husband Toby’s and disappears. Jesse Eisenberg plays Toby, a doctor who finds his life is upended by full-time parenting and wondering if Rachel will come back. Danes said she and Eisenberg have spoken at length about how people seem conditioned to sympathise with men in stressful family situations, while they judge women – one of the big themes of the show.

Fashion-wise, Rachel gives us a masterclass in stylish but edgy dressing for busy mothers working long hours, with a Hobbs blouse (the Macey silk pussy-bow) making an appearance. Rarely seen without at least two necklaces, jewellery layering is also one of her strengths.
