WEATHER WATCH

John Kettley

Northern Ireland has recorded its hottest days on record. Armagh hit 31.4C on Thursday, with just 0.16in (4mm) of rain in many areas for July.

Most of Britain has seen 28C widely breached on a daily basis. Inevitably, this triggered a few afternoon thunderstorms, with heavy downpours in the Pennines and North Midlands and reports of hail the size of marbles.

By Friday evening, thundery rain out of North West France heralded a big change for the weekend across southern Britain. The intensity of the rain brought some flooding, with the South East probably suffering some of the worst weather, leaving warm sunshine and drier weather for the North.

We could see escalating temperatures again later in the summer. Nowhere has exceeded 32C at this stage, which is very modest by modern standards and is almost certain to be beaten next month.
