all the fanfare around London Theatre Royal’s £60 million revamp, many may overlook a thrifty little recycling detail in the Drury Lane playhouse’s lobby. And it can be credited to the ingenuity of the owner Andrew Lloyd Webber’s wife Madeleine. During a recent trip to the couple’s home in Barbados, she spotted some mahogany trees felled by a storm and shipped them back to Britain.

The wood was then delivered to a carpentry-loving gamekeeper at the couple’s Hampshire estate.

He transformed the timber into glossy cabinets that now stand proudly in the theatre’s entrance area. Sources tell me keen conservationist Prince Charles was ‘very impressed’ when he paid a visit.
