PICK OF THE DAY

Baptiste BBC1, 9pm

The tension continues to grip as we ping back and forth between two different time periods in the second episode of this thriller.

Going back 14 months, Baptiste (Tchéky Karyo) is with the British ambassador to Hungary, Emma (Fiona Shaw, right with Karyo), after her husband was murdered and her two sons went missing. The detective seems to be hot on the trail of the tattooed man who is the prime suspect but escaped his grasp in the opening episode.

But in the present, a now dishevelled Baptiste is shocked as Emma – in a wheelchair – arrives with that same suspect caged in the back of a car to help find what’s left of her family. Secrets come thick and fast to explain events in the intervening time, and the story is given a contemporary edge as the anti-immigrant, Hungarian far-right movement looms increasingly large.
