‘Inspiration’ Jones wants historic gold

JADE JONES will be hoping to make Olympic history for Britain today while also serving as an inspiration for the rest of the team.

The 28-year-old from Wales (right) could become the first GB woman to win gold at three successive Games in taekwondo’s -57kg category.

Her Tokyo team-mate Mahama Cho explains how Jones sets the tone for a squad that is hoping to return with multiple medals.

‘To go for your third title, that takes immense determination,’ says Cho.

‘To come back again, and to work and work to get back here, even though you have won it twice, shows how much grit she has. It is inspirational for the team.’

Jones’s event runs from the heats this morning through to the medal contests in the second session in Tokyo.

The illustration on the right explains how the scoring works in her sport. Electronic devices register a competitor’s strike, while judges can award

extra points for technique.
