1 AQUADULCE CLAUDIA Originating in Spain and introduced in 1844, 3ft-tall plants, right, carry masses of 9in pods filled with flat, tender white beans. 2 DE MONICA Ideal for sowing in light soils, plants grow to about 4ft and are laden with 6in pods that surround five to seven creamycoloured beans. 3 LUZ DE OTONO With a name that translates as ‘autumn light’, this Spanish variety grows to 3ft and has 10in pods packed with between five and seven beans. 4 SUPER AQUADULCE Compact 2½ft-tall plants produce loads of pods that house five to seven beans with an excellent flavour and texture. 5 WITKIEM VROMA Bushy, waist-high plants supply large yields of straight, uniform pods containing five or so succulent, tasty beans.
