Joe Lycett vs The Oil Giant

Comedian Joe Lycett (right) has taken on some big beasts in his role as Channel 4’s consumer champion. But now, ahead of the COP26 global conference on climate change in Glasgow next week, he faces his mightiest challenge yet – going into battle against the giant oil corporation Shell.

These days the company pushes an increasingly eco-friendly image, promising to deal with the environmental problems the planet faces. Yet it’s not a story accepted by green campaigners, who instead tell Lycett about the company’s enormous carbon footprint.

And so he conceives of an eye-catching way to combat the corporate PR: by creating an advert with a more accurate picture of what Shell is really getting up to. But then there’s another formidable challenge – just getting the oil executives to listen to what he has to say.
