Cobalt is fuelling the green revolution, yet around 70 per cent of the world’s supply of the mineral is mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo, mostly in the southern Katanga area, thought to be one of the ten most polluted places on Earth. As reporter Jamal Osman discovers, scientists are also researching a possible link between mining byproducts and birth defects in the region.
