Weren’t you supposed to be up front, Phil?

EVEN Phil Foden doesn’t know what his position is. He started as striker but rarely played there. ‘We change it game to game,’ he said. ‘I can drop deep and get on the ball, pick passes off. Sometimes I stay higher than normal. The aim was to drop in and get the ball as much as possible.’ As his pass map (left) shows, he did just that. His passes came from deep but also he had the most shots of his career.

Pep Guardiola believes he’s too good to be pigeon-holed into one position: ‘It doesn’t matter where he plays, he plays good.’
