The first three series of this Glasgow-set detective drama, which ran from 1983 to 2010, were possibly the best, with dark touches of Grand Guignol, before it later turned into a more generic police procedural. Mark McManus (above) played the gritty, no-nonsense cop of the title until his death in 1994.

Such was his potent presence (knowing how to pronounce murr-der, the show’s trademark) that when he died, the show carried on for 15 years with its existing title. Available now
