We want our club back, supporters tell board

By Dominic King

EVERTON fans turned their fury on the club’s board as several hundred stayed behind after the final whistle to stage a noisy protest.

The majority of the gathering were in the Gwladys Street stand but others were situated

in the Park End, while a smattering based themselves in the Main Stand. On the back of a run in which the team have taken six points from the last 42, tensions ran high.

Among the chants were cries of ‘sack the board’ and ‘we want our club back’ and the protest continued way beyond 3pm.

Angry supporters confronted chairman Bill Kenwright outside the ground after the game. In a clip posted on Twitter, he tells fans: ‘I want to help’ but there are chants of ‘Kenwright and Co, it’s time to go’ as he departs.

It is a long time since supporters have been so openly mutinous — the late 1990s is the most comparable situation — and the anger shows no sign of subsiding. There is an appetite for change among the fan base but owner Farhad Moshiri increased his stake in the club to 94.1per cent on Friday.

Caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson said: ‘Fans can protest and say what they want because it is their club. They have the right to support their club in any way they want. I know how sick they are because I am gutted as much as them.’
