Who Do You Think You Are?

BBC1, 9pm

There’s a particularly strong line-up of comedians in the latest series of genealogical journeys of discovery, with Richard Osman, Matt Lucas and Ralf Little to come in future weeks, along with Motherland star Anna Maxwell Martin.

But in the opening episode, Sue Perkins (right) takes a break from her usual stint of travelogues to go on a trip into her family’s past. Imbuing the standard formula with a distinct flavour of personal philosophy, Perkins is joined at first by her comedy partner Mel Giedroyc to go through a box of photos. Finding a picture of her father Bertie, Perkins quips happily: ‘Twinkles and grin. He was a good egg, wasn’t he?’

But the research soon uncovers the travails of the First World War, and she’s forced to go travelling once again, this time deep into Eastern Europe to dig up the roots of her ancestry.
