Yates win is bittersweet

CYCLING: Simon Yates claimed his second stage win of this year’s Giro d’Italia but that could not make up for the disappointment of being out of contention for the winner’s pink jersey.

Yates showed his class in high temperatures, overhauling race favourite Richard Carapaz on the run-in to Turin, winning stage 14 by 15 seconds.

But the Briton remains a long way down the standings following a crash on stage four and losing 11 minutes on stage 11. ‘Not to put a downer on the day but I came here to win the race,’ said Yates.

Ineos rider Carapaz is seven seconds clear of Jai Hindley in the general classification.
