Masood blows shot at history
By Richard Gibson
SHAN MASOOD missed the chance to reach the coveted 1,000-run mark in first-class cricket by the end of May after succumbing to a duck for Derbyshire at local rivals Nottinghamshire.
Pakistan star Masood, one of the signings of the 2022 County Championship season, failed to add to his 844-run tally when England bowler Stuart Broad won a marginal lbw call in the first over of Derbyshire’s second innings at Trent Bridge as the away side battled to avert their first Division Two loss under new coach Mickey Arthur. Masood would have been only the third player since the Second World War to reach the 1,000-run landmark before June 1.
Recent Test call-up Harry Brook, of Yorkshire, and Kent’s Ben Compton are the only two other players to top 800 runs. Although Compton (810) trails Brook (840), he now looks the only challenger to the record books as he potentially has another innings for Kent against Northants today, and may feature in a Counties XI against the New Zealanders from Thursday.
Keith Barker surged to the top of the wicket-takers’ list as six second-innings victims in Hampshire’s 10-wicket win at Somerset took him to 27 for the season.
