Spanish fury at Mbappe’s snub

By Pete Jenson

LA LIGA have threatened Paris Saint-Germain with legal action after Kylian Mbappe dramatically turned his back on a move to Real Madrid to stay in the French capital.

Mbappe, who had been expected to join Real next month, has now signed a three-year extension with PSG believed to be worth more than £200milion.

The Spanish league released a statement condemning PSG’s behaviour as ‘scandalous’ and said they will file a complaint to UEFA.

‘This type of agreement attacks the economic stability of European football putting at risk hundreds of thousands of jobs and the integrity of the sport,’ the statement read.

‘It is scandalous that a club like PSG, which last season reported losses of more than 220million euros after accumulating losses of more than 700million euros in prior seasons, can close such a deal.’

Real have pursued the France international for five years and twice came close to signing him but this time were convinced they had their man and briefed that a six-year deal had been agreed but not signed. Real had agreed to pay the 23-year-old a world record £110m signing on fee and £40m for six seasons.

But it is believed that PSG simply upped the perks, trumping Real’s money with a staggering £127m signing on fee as well as £34m a year. They also tempted the 2018 World Cup winner with greater levels of control in the running of the French giants.

Missing out is as potentially as embarrassing for Real as their failed European Super League launch last year.

Liverpool forwards Sadio Mane and Mo Salah could now be targets as Real look to make amends for missing out on Mbappe.

Mbappe staying also points to Mauricio Pochettino’s future being in doubt.

Zinedine Zidane has been linked with the job and his promised arrival has been seen as another potential factor in persuading Mbappe to stay.
