YOUR AMAZING BODY
THE voicebox has evolved over millions of years to stop us shrieking like chimps.
Researchers analysed chimps’ vocal cords and noticed thin, ribbon-like tissues that are not found in humans. Using computer modelling, they found that these vibrate when chimps make noise, resulting in their characteristic shrieks.
It is widely thought that our primate ancestors evolved to discard these tissues as an even tone of voice improved chances of survival – it helped early men and women work with others to fight predators and forage.
