Marriage

BBC1, 9pm, Sunday & Monday

This absorbing four-part drama gives viewers the almost uncomfortable sense of eavesdropping on the intimate private life of a long-married couple, Ian (Sean Bean) and Emma (Nicola Walker), both right.

That’s testimony both to the assured script from writer Stefan Golaszewski (Mum), and also the performances by the two leads, in which long silences are invested with as much meaning as the words that come in between.

This is a portrait of a couple who’ve been married for 27 years and are now caught in middle age watching their adult daughter blossom and taking care of Emma’s father (James Bolam) just weeks after Ian’s own father died. Meanwhile, Ian is out of work and at a loose end, while Emma has rather too much going on in her office – and behind all this is a tragic loss they both share. ★★★★★
