Hayes: WSL needs to quit the FA

By Kathryn Batte

EMMA HAYES says the Women’s Super League must leave the FA and called on the Premier League to offer a huge investment after England’s Euro 2022 triumph.

The FA have run the WSL since 2011 but Hayes, who is celebrating 10 years as manager of Chelsea today, believes the women’s game will only progress if it parts ways with the governing body.

‘That win [in the Euros] will open the eyes of the Premier League. I’ve always been an advocate of the women’s game becoming a business. The next step is the WSL leaving the FA and going to the Premier League or an independent body.

‘We need expertise coming into the game. For me, that is hands down the next step. That’s not the FA’s responsibility, they don’t run leagues. It’s not their job to do that, they’re there for the national team.

‘My hopes? A huge injection from the Premier League that then goes across the whole spectrum: grassroots, smaller clubs.’

Chelsea are looking to win a record fourth league title in a row and Hayes, who is the longest serving manager in the WSL, is confident the club will continue to succeed under new owner, American businessman, Todd Boehly.

‘I think this ownership group is going to be amazing for us because they’re coming from a culture of value in women’s sport, as a business. And I look forward to the next growth with them.’

Chelsea play West Ham at Stamford Bridge on September 11.
