Neville’s shock at workers’ quarters
GARY NEVILLE is visibly shocked at the poor living quarters for World Cup workers when he is shown around official accommodation in a documentary to be screened tonight.
Neville criticises immigrant workers’ wages of about $275 (£250) a month – with many surviving on $55 (£50) a month after sending the rest home to their families.
In Countdown To Qatar on Sky Sports Premier League, to be shown at 9.30pm tonight, Neville says of the workers’ conditions: ‘It’s just inequality like you would not believe. It’s staggering really. This is not a home.’ Neville expresses serious concern about workers’ wages. ‘If that was my son, my daughter, my brother, I would not want them to be in this position.’ The former Manchester United and England player – expected to be an ITV pundit for the World Cup – has not previously condemned human rights abuses in Qatar. He was criticised for failing to raise the issues of racism and persecution of women and gay people in the Middle Eastern country in an interview with David Beckham in Neville’s YouTube show, The Overlap. Beckham is being paid up to £150million to be a World Cup ambassador.
