My pension went up too...but so did tax

I was amused to read Edward Walsh’s letter last week about becoming entitled to an extra 25p a week state pension because he had reached his 80th birthday.

The same happened to me, but the next day the postman brought me a letter from HM Revenue & Customs telling me that as my income had increased, they had had to issue me with a new tax code – which increased my tax by 25p a week!
