EVER tried to hold your nose while humming? You’ll find you can’t do it for longer than a couple of seconds. To hum, air must pass between the vocal cords in the throat, causing them to vibrate and make a noise. The air then needs to escape through the mouth or nose. A hum is achieved with the mouth closed, creating the ‘mmmmm’ sound. But if the nose is blocked while the mouth is also closed, the air cannot escape, making it nigh impossible. A sound will be generated, but you’ll find yourself forced to open your mouth to take a breath. It’s possible to make a sound similar to a hum with the nose blocked and the mouth open, but this is more of an ‘ahhhh’.
