PREMIERSHIP

■ NEWCASTLE head coach Dave Falder bemoaned his side’s failure to get the basics right as they fell to a 39-17 defeat at London Irish.

The Falcons were riding high off back-to-back Premiership wins over Exeter and Gloucester, but Irish’s James Stokes scored early in west London to put them immediately on the back foot. Having trailed by six at halftime, Newcastle briefly led 1713 thanks to Mateo Carreras and Guy Pepper’s scores, but tries from Paddy Jackson, Adam Coleman and a Lucio Cinti double secured a vital Irish win that lifts them off the bottom.

Newcastle boss Falder said: ‘We have done well over the last six or seven weeks, but we suffered today from not doing the basics right and a lack of physicality, so it was just a really poor day at the office. ‘We are just disappointed with how we played today and disappointed for our supporters who came down, especially after two big league wins coming into it.’
