Boy, 16, held after teenage girl dies from stab wounds

A TEENAGE boy has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 15-year-old girl was stabbed to death.

Officers from Northumbria Police were called at 5.10pm on Friday to reports of a stabbing in the town of Hexham.

Emergency services attended, where a boy and girl – aged 16 and 15 respectively – suffered serious injuries ‘consistent with having been caused by a bladed article’, police said.

They were both taken to hospital, where the girl died later that evening. The boy’s injuries were described as serious but not life-threatening.

Police said another boy, also 16, was arrested on suspicion of murder, having initially been arrested on suspicion of assault. Officers said it is believed the three youngsters knew each other.

Chief Superintendent Sam Rennison thanked members of the public who tried to provide assistance to the victims.

Hexham Mayor Derek Kennedy said last night:

‘To happen to such a young person and the alleged perpetrator to be a young person is just shocking.’
