VENUE THAT INSPIRED FLEMING

BOND author Ian Fleming was a frequent diner at Scott’s in its glory days when it hosted Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin and Marilyn Monroe.

It is said to be where Fleming first heard of a dry martini being served ‘shaken, not stirred’, inspiring his hero’s most famous phrase. He said he imagined Bond sitting at a corner table in the restaurant to ‘watch the pretty girls go past’. Scott’s is mentioned in several of his books. In You Only Live Twice, Bond wants to take a date there for ‘our first roast grouse of the year and pink champagne’.
